Loathed though I am to blow my own virtual trumpet, but I appear to have inadvertently kick-started an meme. It just goes to show that you're never too old. My first ever meme - at 57! Who'd have thunk it. Thanks to Brian, Alyson and John for picking up the ball and running with it and also to Charity Chic for suggesting it be christened Swedey McSwedeface! It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but it did make me laugh out loud.
I'd already posted a few shots of me with various records covering my ugly mug, before the T.Rex one that instigated this little kerfuffle. 'The Slider' was my first LP, 'The Sweet's Biggest Hits' John's and 'Flaming Star' was Alyson's. Now John is in the market for further entries into the 'Doing a Swede' canon. Check out his post here.
I actually started the whole 'hiding my face behind a record' thing to silently celebrate the fact that after many years of being inaccessibly packed away in boxes, my LP collection is now stored on a recently purchased set of vintage shelving and, as you can imagine, I'm having a whale of a time rediscovering old favourites, while simultaneously bemoaning some of the things I stupidly chose to part with when times were hard.
Here's an LP I've been grooving to that you might not have immediately associated with my particular taste buds. 'Intuition' by Linx is a brilliantly crafted Eighties pop LP, stuffed to the gills with catchy, danceable tunes. Hearing it again now takes me back to my very earliest days of working in record shops, when the queue at the counter started when we opened the doors at 9am and ended when we shut them at 5.30pm. You try telling the kids of today that - and they won't believe you.

Your work here is done!
And as SMcSF says, if anyone would like to join this (very) exclusive band of warriors, then feel free to get your instamatic out and send me the results.

"That can't be the seme tune I'm thinking of" I thought. Then I played your link.....
I can't actually remember the first album I bought with my own money, suffice to say it was probably very embarrassing. The first album I owned was Abba's 'Super Trouper' but that was a Christmas present - along with my very first record player - from my mum and dad when I was 9. I still have it!
I loved Intuition (the song). I remember having it on some disco compilation I bought back in the day.
Haha, love all this! And isn't it weird how we speak another language now? - 'Swedey McSwede Face' and 'memes'- imagine yourself at the time when you actually bought that album but being told that this was in the future and on a peculiar thing called a 'blog', you'd have been completely foxed. And Linx, undoubtedly classy stuff; David Grant looks so much better now than he did then!
John: As for my first album and a suitable pic, I wrote about that purchase on SDS a few years ago, but now I just wish I'd kept the original vinyl instead of replacing it with CD, especially as it was so meaningful to me in so many ways. However I may have found a way around it so if/when I do will send something over.
Much as I'd like to take the credit for Swedey McSwedeface the credit is due to Alyson
"...bemoaning some of the things I stupidly chose to part with when times were hard."
Story of my life. Even now.
"...when the queue at the counter started when we opened the doors at 9am and ended when we shut them at 5.30pm."
I feel we need more of your record shop memories. If I can bore everyone with my radio tales, you can at least return the favour.
Congratulations, SMcSF. I'm afraid if I did something like that, a CD wouldn't cover enough of my mug, ugly or not. . . .
Good to see your casual little Sleeveface pic idea is gathering steam. Having now evolved into SMcSF you've really started something but as C said above who would have ever thought that our first albums would be shared on such a thing as a "blog" - Wouldn't have believed it!
Oh the nostalgia of having a steady queue at the record shop counter - Yes please, more of these record shop memories.
This is too good. Everybody's doin' the Swede! I have to get in on the first album bit too. Still have mine for sure. Hope you had a nice visit with the relatives.
To be fair, CC did come up with the ultimate moniker of Swedey McSwedeface. Mine was the much more boring Sleevey McSleeveface. As for "Doing a Swede" - A combined effort I think!
