Three New Tunes

We had to buy a car at very short notice last week, following unexpected (and terminal) problems with the previous one. There is a lot going on round these parts at the moment and a whole lot more things coming up in the near future, so we couldn't really afford to be without wheels for any length of time. We picked up a nice little run around, only one owner since 2005 and only 60,000 on the clock, but (and it's a big but for yours truly) the CD player is kaput. We'd been spoiled by our previous vehicle, which had the best in-car music system I've ever owned, so this was a bitter blow. We'll sort it out in due course, but for our flying visit to the smoke at the weekend we alleviated the tedium of the drive by grabbing the DAB radio from the kitchen and chucking it onto the back set. Presto! Music on the move.

Here are three new tunes that have caught my ear in recent weeks on 6Music, all of which we heard a couple more times in the car over the weekend. They're new names to me at right now, but when I get a spare mo' you can be sure that I'll be digging a little deeper into each of 'em.

I can't help but be intrigued by your mysterious need for this new car, Mr. S! We haven't had a vehicle for about 12 years now (since the last one died on us.) I must admit that I miss it sometimes but, as we live in a big city with a decent transportation system we decided not to splurge out on a replacement.

May your new car serve you well! ;-)

The last time I bought a new car was in October 2003 when we were expecting our first child. I traded in a 1999 Volkswagen Golf for a more family friendly 2003 Volkswagen Jetta station wagon. Hard to believe I'm still driving it and that my oldest son, now 14, is not as old as my car. It's so old I have a CD player and a tape deck in the factory stereo... years before an auxiliary jack was available to plug in an mp3 player. As usual, I'm lost in the past and I find myself making mix tapes for the car on cassettes again. It tests your patience a bit filling a 90-minute tape in real time in this day and age, but I think it's good for you to actually listen as you're making it. Highly recommended.

Brian, your 03 Jetta sounds comparable to my 04 Volvo c70 convertible. I will say one thing for my Volvo, it has NINE speakers surrounding me as I drive, all with Dolby Surround Stereo and, of course...a factory 3 disc CD player and Cassette Deck! I have toyed with replacing it, but the stereo is also the car alarm/security system. I play my iPhone playlist from a $30 cassette to headphone jack interface - the cheaper ones hiss terribly. The best sounding album I've played in it recently is Ride's Weather Diaries...bright, shiny and loud!
