To ensure a healthy appetite for my birthday pub
lunch yesterday, Mrs S and I first took a long walk
on a wild and windy stretch of coastal
heath, where the birdlife was plentiful, if
sometimes a little distant. Not distant in
any way, however, were these deer. As we passed a thicket of gorse bushes
there they were, not ten feet away, looking straight at us. When I'm out
walking locally, in a quiet lane or by the river, I occasionally spook a
little fawn, which will run like the wind into the distance. Not these
guys though. We were on their manor and they stood their ground and stared us out, as if daring us to blink first. I
very gently took a couple of shots and then
we moved on and left the beautiful creatures
to graze in peace.

It's a tenuous link I know, but I'm
nevertheless excited to learn that
Deerhunter have a new LP, 'Monomania', due
for release in a couple of weeks time. The
album is the follow up to 2010's brilliant
'Halcyon Digest', which featured one of the
very best tracks of that year, 'He Would
Have Laughed'.

I like this track from a band that I have been, thus far, unacquainted with. More research may be necessary.
When I saw the title of your post I thought perhaps you'd decided to spend your birthday taking out a stag with just one bullet - 'This is this!' - but then considered that it didn't seem very likely as I can tell you're a nature loving fellow. Still, relieved to know you've not gone all De Niro on us. Sounds like a nice birthday out in the wilds.
I'm certainly a nature loving veggie. Perhaps I should have taken longer to consider a better title for the post, whoops! Glad you liked the tune SB.
As I'm sure you can guess, it was lovely to read about your deer encounter and to see the beautiful photos - aren't they amazingly well-camouflaged in these backgrounds, too? It definitely is THEIR home, as you say...
Like SB, relieved to know there was no hunting going on on your part. I didn't imagie there would be! Btw I heard a while back that there were plans to cull deer because their numbers are apparently increasing - like my nature idol Chris Packham I feel sure there must be better ways of dealing with this; he says it's just down to good land management, where apparently wildlife populations tend to sort themselves out naturally. Fingers crossed.
